Ghana’s U-20 women’s team, the Black Princesses, have been drawn into a challenging Group E for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, where they will compete against formidable opponents Japan, New Zealand, and Austria.
The Black Princesses are making their seventh consecutive appearance at the tournament since their debut in 2010. Despite this consistent presence, the team has yet to progress beyond the group stage. Under the guidance of coach Yusif Basigi, the squad is determined to break this streak and make a historic run in the competition.
2018 champions Japan are expected to be Ghana’s toughest opponent, known for their technical skill and disciplined approach. New Zealand, 2014 quarter-finalists, will also present a stern test, while Austria will be eager to make their mark on the world stage.
Africa will be strongly represented at the tournament, with four teams qualifying: Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Morocco. This is a notable increase from the previous two slots, reflecting the growing strength and competitiveness of African women’s football.
The tournament is scheduled to run from August 31 to September 22, 2024. Ghana will open their campaign against Austria at Bogota’s El Techo Stadium on Monday, September 2.
The Black Princesses enter the tournament on the back of a successful 2023, having won the women’s football tournament at the African Games, with standout performances from players like Mukarama Abdulai. Bolstered by this form and a determined squad, Ghana aims to leverage their recent successes to advance beyond the group stage for the first time in the nation’s history.
