Dortmund coach departs club amid strong Champions League run

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic has officially left the club, despite steering the German side to an impressive run in the UEFA Champions League. Terzic guided Dortmund to the 2023-24 Champions League final, where they narrowly fell to Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium. Reports indicate that Terzic himself requested the termination of his contract with immediate effect.
In a statement, Dortmund confirmed that they had agreed to Terzic’s request following discussions with the club’s senior management.
“After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after nine years at BVB – including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach – I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline,” Terzic explained.
Terzic acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized that it was the right time for a change. He expressed gratitude toward Borussia Dortmund and optimism for the club’s future.
Terzic’s journey with Dortmund began in the club’s academy from 2010 to 2013, before brief stints with Slaven Bilic at Besiktas and West Ham. He returned to Dortmund as assistant to Lucien Favre in 2018, later taking over as interim head coach in 2020, during which he led the team to German Cup glory.
Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke praised Terzic’s contributions, highlighting his achievements and expressing gratitude. “Edin Terzic has done an outstanding job in his time at BVB, and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude,” Watzke said. “Edin and I will always remain friends.”
During his tenure, Terzic led Dortmund to a runners-up finish in the Bundesliga and achieved a fifth-place league finish in the 2023-24 season. With Terzic’s departure, Dortmund have now begun the search for a new manager as they aim to build on their recent successes in both domestic and European competitions.
