Champions League star expresses support for Black Stars coach Chris Hughton.

Former Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand has voiced his strong support for Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton, dismissing calls for the Englishman’s removal following Ghana’s disappointing international performances in the United States last October.
Ghana suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to the USA and a 2-0 loss to Mexico, with critics highlighting poor defending and a lack of attacking threat, as the team managed only two shots on target across both matches. The results sparked debate over Hughton’s future ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Despite the criticism, Bertrand, a 2012 Champions League winner, remains confident in Hughton’s abilities. “I think the last two tests in the USA and Mexico were good tests, different styles of football and different opposition, and I feel they are in great hands under Chris Hughton. I am sure by the time the tournament comes up, they will be ready,” he said.
Hughton now looks to rebuild momentum as the Black Stars prepare for World Cup qualifiers in November against Madagascar and Comoros, before turning their attention to the Africa Cup of Nations. In the tournament’s group stage, Ghana will face record-holders Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, aiming to return to continental prominence under Hughton’s guidance.
