2025/26 UCL: Drama across Europe as clubs battle for knockout spots

With the road to the knockout phase beginning to take shape and just two matches left in the group stage, Wednesday night delivered crucial results across nine Champions League fixtures.

At the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium, Qarabağ FK stunned the crowd early by taking the lead against Ajax Amsterdam through Camilo Durán. The Azerbaijani side even restored their lead with a second strike that had the stadium roaring. But Ajax were not done. The Dutch giants mounted a powerful late resurgence, with Kasper Dolberg levelling before Oscar Gloukh netted twice to swing the momentum. Anton Gaaei’s strike sealed the 4–2 comeback, giving Ajax a crucial and hard-earned victory.

Back in Spain, Villarreal hosted FC Copenhagen in a dramatic five-goal encounter. Mohamed Elyounoussi put the Danish visitors ahead before Elias Achouri added a second after halftime. Villarreal refused to fold, responding through Santi Comesaña and Tani Oluwaseyi to bring the game level. But heartbreak struck in the final minute when Andreas Cornelius fired home the winner, handing Copenhagen a thrilling 3–2 away win.

In Bilbao, Athletic Club and Paris Saint-Germain produced a tactical 0–0 draw. Despite spells of pressure from both sides, neither could find the decisive breakthrough in a match defined by defensive structure rather than attacking fireworks.

Over in Germany, Bayer Leverkusen and Newcastle United played out an exciting 2–2 draw. An unfortunate own goal from Bruno Guimarães put Leverkusen ahead before Newcastle hit back. Just when it looked like the English side would leave with all three points, Alejandro Grimaldo struck late to rescue a point for the hosts.

Dortmund also featured a tightly fought contest, as Borussia Dortmund and Bodø/Glimt ended in a 2–2 draw. Both sides pushed relentlessly, creating an open, high-tempo contest, but neither could edge ahead in the final stages.

In Belgium, Arsenal delivered one of the most dominant displays of the evening, defeating Club Brugge 3–0. Clinical finishing and complete control defined the Gunners’ performance as they continued their impressive European form.

Over in Turin, Juventus secured a steady 2–0 win over Pafos FC. After a slow first half, Weston McKennie broke the deadlock before Jonathan David sealed the result, giving Juve the comfort they needed.

In one of the marquee fixtures of the night, Real Madrid fell 1–2 at home to Manchester City. Despite taking the lead, Madrid watched City flip the match with two decisive blows, showcasing their resilience and quality at the Bernabéu.

Finally, in Lisbon, Benfica earned a strong 2–0 win over Napoli. Richard Ríos starred with a goal and assist, helping the Portuguese side make a powerful push toward knockout-stage qualification.

As the tension rises, every point now becomes priceless, and the race to the knockout rounds is wide open.
