Hummels addresses his future after Dortmund’s Champions League triumph over PSG

Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels has spoken candidly about his future at the club following their narrow 1–0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.

The Black and Yellows claimed a crucial advantage at Signal Iduna Park thanks to a superb first-half strike from Niclas Füllkrug, whose 36th-minute finish proved decisive against the French champions.

After the match, Hummels admitted that his next step remains uncertain, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

“Possibly,” Hummels said when asked if this could be his final season at Dortmund. “Nothing has been decided yet. I’ve been thinking about what’s next for me. It won’t be decided until the last game of the season is over, maybe even after that.

“Things can go in any direction. I’m enjoying the fact that I can keep it open. Of course, I’m also looking to see what opportunities there are, including here.

“The Champions League with BVB is secured for next season, and that’s also a big aspect. I just have to see what the options are and what I want to do.”

Since returning to Borussia Dortmund in 2019, the veteran defender has been a commanding and reliable presence at the heart of the defence, playing a pivotal role in the club’s push deep into Europe this season. At 35, Hummels has once again proven his value with composed performances and leadership on the biggest stage.

With Dortmund’s win over PSG guaranteeing qualification for next season’s Champions League, regardless of a potential fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga, the club now faces an important decision regarding one of their standout performers.

While uncertainty surrounds Hummels’ future, Dortmund will be hopeful of retaining the experienced defender as they look to build on their impressive European campaign and possibly push all the way to the Champions League final.
