Sadio Mané: “The Best Team Doesn’t Always Win the AFCON”

Senegal star Sadio Mané has emphasized that winning the Africa Cup of Nations is not solely about technical ability, highlighting the crucial role of mentality as the tournament reaches its decisive stages. Speaking to the media ahead of Senegal’s quarter-final clash against Mali, the experienced forward explained that AFCON often presents challenges that go beyond footballing skill.

According to Mané, navigating these obstacles requires strong focus, humility, and mental resilience from every player in the squad.

“The best team doesn’t always win the Africa Cup of Nations; rather, the team’s mental state plays a significant role, especially with the numerous challenges in this competition,” he said.

A former AFCON winner with Senegal, Mané underlined the importance of composure and taking a match-by-match approach as the defending champions continue their title defence. “I believe we will try to remain humble and grounded, and most importantly, try to approach each match individually,” he added.

Senegal have been one of the standout teams in the tournament, combining the experience of senior players with the energy of youth. Yet, Mané warned against complacency, stressing that the unpredictable nature of AFCON means focus and discipline are just as vital as talent.

The Teranga Lions are set to face Mali in the quarter-finals, a fixture expected to test both sides’ physicality and tactical discipline. Senegal will aim to combine their technical quality with the right mindset as they push for another continental crown.
