Ten Hag Confident Manchester United Can Secure Champions League Qualification

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag remains confident that his side can still qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, despite the uphill task facing the Red Devils in the Premier League run-in.

United currently sit 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with 11 matches left to play, but the Dutch coach has urged his players not to give up on their European ambitions. Ten Hag insists that a strong finish to the season could yet revive their hopes, especially with several variables still in play.

New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made Champions League qualification a key objective, underlining its importance both competitively and financially. However, United’s task became significantly tougher following their 3–1 defeat to Manchester City in the Manchester derby, a result that left them relying on favourable outcomes elsewhere.

In addition to hoping Aston Villa drop points, United must also overtake fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who currently sit six points ahead with a game in hand. There is also the added possibility of the Premier League earning an extra Champions League place under UEFA’s expanded format, which would see the top five qualify.

“It can be an advantage that the fifth spot can also be a Champions League place,” Ten Hag said. “So we have to go for it and win our games.”

For England to secure five Champions League places, Premier League clubs must finish among the top two nations in UEFA’s coefficient rankings across the three European competitions. At present, Italy and Germany occupy the leading positions, with England sitting third. As a result, United’s hopes are partly dependent on the performances of English rivals such as Manchester City and Liverpool in Europe.

Despite Ten Hag’s optimism, the challenge remains daunting. United must bridge a sizeable gap to either Villa or Spurs, a task made harder by their inconsistent form this season. The loss to City marked their 11th Premier League defeat of the campaign, pushing them close to their worst-ever league return.

Attention now turns to their next fixture against Everton, where United will be desperate to spark a revival and keep their Champions League dream alive as the season enters its decisive phase.
