Kurt Okraku Sets Sights on WAFCON Glory

GFA President Kurt Okraku has set his sights firmly on continental success as Ghana’s Black Queens gear up for the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco.
Ghana have been drawn into a challenging Group D, where they will face Cameroon, Mali and Cape Verde. Despite the demanding nature of the group, confidence remains high within the Black Queens camp following their impressive showing at the previous edition of the tournament in 2024, also hosted in Morocco.
That campaign marked a significant resurgence for the Black Queens, as they finished third after defeating South Africa in the bronze medal match, a result that signalled Ghana’s renewed competitiveness on the continental stage.
Speaking about Ghana’s objectives for the upcoming tournament, Kurt Okraku made the nation’s ambition unequivocally clear.
“The ambition of the nation is to win the trophy [WAFCON]. And I think that we are not far away from that,” he stated.
The GFA President further emphasized that a title-winning mentality requires Ghana to approach the competition without fear, regardless of the opponent.
“I think that on the back of the fact that Ghana were third at the last WAFCON [2024 WAFCON], Ghana should be ready to face any opponent. Ghana [Black Queens] should be able to play against any side on the African continent if you want to become a champion,” Okraku added.
While the Black Queens are still in pursuit of their maiden WAFCON title, the tournament also carries major global significance. A place in the semi-finals will secure qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, a stage Ghana have not graced since 2007.
Having reached the semi-finals at the last edition, the Black Queens will be eager not only to repeat that feat but to go a step further by mounting a serious title challenge in 2026.
The 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will run from March 17 to April 3, promising weeks of intense competition and high-quality women’s football across the African continent.
