Manchester United Part Ways with Ruben Amorim After 14 Months

Manchester United have parted ways with Ruben Amorim after just 14 months in charge, following the club’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Sunday. Brenden Aaronson put Leeds ahead two minutes after the hour mark, only for Matheus Cunha to equalize three minutes later, leaving United sixth in the Premier League after 20 games and prompting the decision to relieve Amorim of his duties.
The news was first reported by transfer expert David Ornstein. Manchester United later confirmed in a club statement that the leadership had “reluctantly made the decision” to make a change, adding that it was intended to give the team “the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Darren Fletcher, former United player and current Under-18s coach, is expected to take temporary charge. He will lead the side for Wednesday night’s away game against Burnley, with a permanent managerial appointment likely to be made in the summer.
Amorim was appointed as Manchester United head coach on November 1, 2024, officially starting on November 11, 2024, after completing his commitments with Sporting CP. He signed a contract until June 2027, with an option for an additional year, taking over from interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.
During his tenure, Amorim’s record stood at 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 losses across all competitions, giving him a win rate of approximately 38.1%. He guided United to the 2025 UEFA Europa League final, where they were defeated by Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao, and oversaw a disappointing 15th-place finish in the previous Premier League season.
The decision to part ways with Amorim marks another significant managerial change at Old Trafford as Manchester United look to recalibrate their season and challenge for higher league positions.
