Egypt march into AFCON 2025 round of 16 as Salah sinks South Africa

Egypt booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in dramatic fashion after edging past South Africa with a hard-fought 1–0 victory on Friday, December 26, in Morocco.

The Pharaohs came into the Group B encounter knowing a positive result would put them firmly in control of their AFCON destiny, but they were made to work for every inch against a spirited Bafana Bafana side at the Stade Adrar in Agadir. From the opening whistle, the match lived up to its billing, with both teams showing urgency, intensity, and tactical discipline in a battle for supremacy at the top of the group.

The decisive moment arrived just before halftime when Egypt were awarded a penalty following sustained pressure in the South African box. Mohamed Salah stepped up with trademark composure and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, calmly converting in the 45th minute to give the seven-time champions a crucial lead heading into the break.

However, Egypt’s task became significantly tougher moments later when right-back Mohamed Hany was shown a red card in first-half injury time, reducing the Pharaohs to ten men. The dismissal shifted the momentum, and South Africa emerged from the interval with renewed purpose.

Bafana Bafana dominated much of the second half, using their numerical advantage to control possession and push Egypt deep into their own half. Wave after wave of South African attacks tested the Egyptian defence, but the Pharaohs held firm, showing resilience, organisation, and experience. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy produced a series of vital interventions, while Egypt’s back line defended with determination to protect their slender lead.

Despite South Africa’s impressive performance, they were unable to find a breakthrough. The final whistle confirmed a significant result for Egypt their first victory over South Africa since 2006 and one that carries major implications for the tournament.

With six points from two matches, Egypt sit atop Group B and become the first nation to secure qualification to the knockout stage of the 2025 AFCON. The result reinforces their status as title contenders, while South Africa will look to regroup and keep their hopes alive in the remaining group fixtures.
