Mahrez penalty sends Algeria into AFCON last 16 with gritty win over Burkina Faso

Algeria booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last 16 with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Burkina Faso, a result that underlined their growing confidence and tactical discipline in the tournament. The decisive moment came in the 23rd minute when captain Riyad Mahrez calmly converted a first-half penalty, sending goalkeeper Hervé Koffi the wrong way to give the Desert Foxes a lead they would never relinquish.

Mahrez’s goal was significant on multiple levels. Already Algeria’s all-time leading scorer at AFCON, the strike marked his ninth goal in the competition’s history, further cementing his legacy as one of the nation’s most influential players on the continental stage.

His composure from the spot reflected the calm authority Algeria showed throughout the match, especially when placed under pressure.

Burkina Faso entered the encounter with momentum after a promising start to the tournament and enjoyed slightly more of the ball, finishing with 51 percent possession.

However, their dominance did not translate into goals. Algeria’s defensive unit remained organized and resilient, closing down spaces and limiting clear-cut chances. When Burkina Faso did break through, goalkeeper Luca Zidane proved equal to the task, producing several crucial saves that preserved Algeria’s narrow advantage.

The victory sees Algeria move to the top of Group E with a perfect six points from two matches, confirming their progression to the knockout stages with a game to spare. Burkina Faso, meanwhile, remain second on three points and will need a strong performance in their final group match to secure qualification.

Looking ahead, Algeria will face Equatorial Guinea in their next fixture, aiming to maintain momentum and fine-tune their approach before the knockout rounds. Burkina Faso, on the other hand, will turn their focus to a decisive clash against Sudan, knowing there is still work to be done to keep their AFCON campaign alive.
