2026 World Cup: Asamoah Gyan Admits Tricky Group as Ghana Target Qualification

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has expressed optimism about Ghana’s chances of progressing to the next round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the Black Stars being drawn into what he described as a tricky group.
Ghana were placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, a competitive and unpredictable lineup that has already sparked widespread debate among fans and pundits ahead of the tournament in North America.
England enter the competition as one of the favourites, boasting a squad packed with Premier League stars and extensive tournament experience. Croatia, runners-up at the 2018 World Cup and semi-finalists in 2022, remain one of Europe’s most technically gifted sides, capable of controlling matches through their midfield quality. Panama, meanwhile, may be considered underdogs but have steadily improved in recent years and will be eager to cause upsets.
Despite the strength of the opposition, Gyan believes the Black Stars have the quality and mentality required to rise to the occasion.
Speaking during the official World Cup draw, the former Ghana striker said:
“It’s a tricky group. We will do our possible best to qualify from the group stage.”
His comments reflect a renewed sense of belief among Ghanaian supporters, who are eager to see the national team return to prominence after failing to advance beyond the group stage in their last two World Cup appearances.
The expanded 48-team format at the 2026 World Cup offers teams a greater opportunity to progress, and Ghana will be hoping to take full advantage as they seek to improve on recent performances.
With a squad that blends youthful exuberance and emerging talent, the Black Stars have a chance to rebuild their reputation on the global stage, and possibly even surpass the heights of their memorable 2010 World Cup run.
As preparations intensify in the lead-up to the tournament, Ghana remain focused on defying expectations and reclaiming their place among football’s elite. The challenge is formidable, but as Asamoah Gyan insists, qualification from the group is tough, yet far from impossible.
