Sports Minister Hints at Ghana Hosting 2026 Commonwealth Games

Ghana has announced its intention to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following the withdrawal of the initial host candidates. The country’s bid comes on the back of its successful organization of the 2023 African Games, which showcased its capacity to host major international sporting events.
Mustapha Ussif, Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to host the prestigious games. During discussions with the President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) during his visit to Ghana, the CGF chief was reportedly impressed by the facilities showcased during the African Games and supported the idea of an African nation hosting the Commonwealth Games.
“We already have the necessary facilities, and hosting the Commonwealth Games will be far more financially viable compared to the African Games,” Ussif told GHOne TV. He added that, unlike the African Games which are entirely self-funded, host nations of the Commonwealth Games receive financial support from the CGF, making Ghana’s potential hosting more feasible.
The move comes after Singapore and Malaysia opted out of the bidding process, and the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as the original host due to escalating costs. While the CGF has not disclosed the countries currently under consideration, officials are optimistic about selecting a new host, with an announcement expected in May.
Ghana’s recent success with the African Games, held in March 2024, has strengthened its credentials, receiving positive feedback despite initial challenges and demonstrating the country’s readiness to host large-scale international sporting events.
