Nigeria beat Gabon in extra time to reach 2026 World Cup (CAF) playoff final

Nigeria booked their place in the African World Cup playoffs final with a hard-fought 4–1 victory over Gabon in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday.

Super Eagles forward Akor Adams, who features for Sevilla in Spain’s La Liga, opened the scoring in the 78th minute. Gabon, however, found a late lifeline when Mario Lemina of Galatasaray struck an equalizer in the 89th minute, sending the Panthers’ bench into jubilation.

Nigeria regained control in extra time through Chidera Ejuke, also of Sevilla, who restored the lead early in the additional period. Star striker Victor Osimhen then extended the advantage in the 102nd minute and sealed the win with his second goal just five minutes after the restart.

With the emphatic result, Eric Chelle’s side advances to face the winner of the late kickoff between Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday’s playoff final. The victor of that clash will go on to represent CAF in the inter-confederation playoffs next March, with a coveted spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada up for grabs.
