Norway qualifies for first World Cup in 28 years after dominant win over Estonia

Norway has officially secured their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, qualifying for the tournament for the first time in 28 years after a convincing 4-1 victory over Estonia in their latest qualifier.

The win, which was their seventh consecutive victory in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, sees Norway top Group I with an unassailable lead, six points clear of Italy in second place.

The performance was spearheaded by a clinical brace from Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and another from the former Real Sociedad forward Alexander Sørloth, whose goals sealed the win and made qualification a mathematical certainty.

With one game remaining in the qualifying campaign, Norway now has a goal difference of +19 over second-place Italy, a gap so large that Italy would need an extraordinary turnaround to deny them.

As it turned out, Italy’s hopes of catching Norway were extinguished when they failed to defeat Moldova in their qualifying match later on Thursday, confirming Norway’s World Cup berth. Even had Italy won, Norway’s superior goal difference made their qualification virtually assured, ensuring that the Norwegians will be at the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

This qualification marks a historic achievement for Norway, who have not participated in a World Cup since 1998.

With Haaland in sensational form and Sørloth providing critical support, the Norwegian national team has proved themselves one of the most impressive sides in the qualifying stages.

While the first half was a frustrating one for Norway, who struggled to convert chances, Sørloth finally broke the deadlock early in the second half.

The striker rose to meet a corner with a powerful header, giving Norway the lead. He then doubled the advantage just minutes later, again finishing from close range after a well-timed cross from the right.

Haaland, who has been in spectacular form for both Manchester City and Norway, then took charge.

The prolific forward netted his first goal of the evening in the 63rd minute, heading in a pinpoint cross from Julian Ryerson. Haaland made it 4-1 just seven minutes later, rifling home a shot from inside the penalty area to put the result beyond doubt and send the Norwegian fans into ecstasy.

Despite the scoreline, Estonia managed to pull one back in the 77th minute. Robi Saarma’s long-range shot deflected past Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, giving the Estonians a rare moment of celebration.

However, the goal was little more than a consolation, as Norway comfortably saw out the rest of the match and celebrated their historic qualification.

The 2026 World Cup will be Norway’s first appearance on the world’s biggest stage since 1998, when they competed in France.

After years of near-misses and disappointing campaigns, the Norwegian team, led by manager Ståle Solbakken, has finally achieved what many had thought impossible: a return to the global footballing elite.

At the heart of Norway’s success has been the brilliant form of Haaland, who has been in sensational goal-scoring shape throughout the qualifiers. His combination with Sørloth in attack has been a revelation, while the likes of captain Martin Ødegaard and defender Kristoffer Ajer have also played pivotal roles in the team’s strong defensive and attacking performances.

With qualification now secured, Norway can begin to look forward to their campaign in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. There will be high expectations for the team, given their impressive qualifying campaign, and Haaland’s exceptional form promises that they could make a real impact on the world stage.

This qualification is a momentous occasion for Norwegian football, and the country’s footballing future has never looked brighter.

With a talented squad brimming with potential, the dream of World Cup glory is now a reality for Norway, who will look to make the most of this long-awaited return to international football’s grandest stage.
