“Lamine Yamal Shines as Barcelona Cruise Past Benfica into Champions League Quarter-Finals”

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal produced a dazzling display as FC Barcelona defeated Benfica 3–1 to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, sealing a 4–1 aggregate victory.

The 17-year-old was at the heart of everything Barcelona did going forward. Yamal opened the scoring by providing a sublime assist for the in-form Raphinha, before scoring a breathtaking goal of his own to restore Barca’s lead after Benfica briefly drew level.

Yamal’s vision was evident from the outset. In the opening exchanges, he threaded a delicate finesse pass through Benfica’s defence to release Raphinha, who met the ball with a precise volley to give Barcelona an early advantage.

Benfica responded through Nicolás Otamendi, whose powerful header momentarily reignited hopes for the visitors. But any comeback was swiftly extinguished by Yamal’s moment of brilliance.

Receiving the ball on the edge of the penalty area, the La Masia graduate curled a majestic effort into the bottom-left corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. Raphinha later wrapped up the victory with a composed finish into the bottom corner, completing his brace and sealing a commanding win for the Catalans.

Yamal’s goal and assist took his tally to 28 goal contributions across all competitions this season, underlining his extraordinary influence despite his tender age. Beyond the numbers, it is the quality of his performances that continues to astonish. Since making his professional debut at just 15 years and 291 days, Yamal has been a revelation, with his composure, creativity, and decision-making far beyond his years.

His scintillating performances at the 2024 European Championship played a key role in Spain’s fourth continental triumph, further cementing his status as one of world football’s brightest young talents.

The 2024 Golden Boy winner also etched his name into the record books against Benfica. At 17 years and 241 days, he became the youngest player in Champions League history to both score and assist in the same match.

While Yamal stole the headlines, Raphinha’s contribution was equally impressive. His brace took his Champions League tally this season to 16 goal contributions (11 goals and five assists). Only Lionel Messi, with 19 goal involvements in the 2011–12 campaign, has recorded more in a single Champions League season for Barcelona.

The win makes Barcelona the first club to reach the quarter-finals under the competition’s new format.

Hansi Flick’s side will now face the winner of Borussia Dortmund or Lille as they continue their pursuit of a sixth Champions League title and their first since 2015.
