7 Ghanaian stars set to make an impact as Champions League season kicks off

The 2024-25 UEFA Champions League season officially kicks off on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, marking the start of a new era with a revamped league format replacing the traditional group stage. This year, the competition expands to include 36 teams—four more than in previous seasons—promising a packed schedule and thrilling matchups under the European lights.

Several Ghanaian stars are expected to feature prominently, and Sport Blitz 360 highlights seven players who could make an impact this season.

Ibrahim Sulemana – Atalanta
The 21-year-old midfielder moved from Cagliari to Atalanta this summer for €7.5m. Sulemana has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under coach Gian Piero Gasperini, clocking just a minute across four league appearances so far. Returning from injury, he will hope to earn playing time against Arsenal on Wednesday after being on the bench against Fiorentina.

Thomas Partey – Arsenal
The most experienced Ghanaian on the list, Partey has made 32 Champions League appearances and scored twice. The former Atletico Madrid star is a key figure for Mikel Arteta, featuring in all four of Arsenal’s league matches this season. Partey is expected to play a crucial role when Arsenal face Atalanta on Wednesday.

Kamal Sowah – Club Brugge
Although an outcast at Club Brugge, Sowah remains contracted until 2025. The former Right to Dream graduate recently rejected an offer from Mexico’s FC Juárez, choosing to stay in Belgium. With 12 Champions League appearances to his name, Sowah will seize any opportunity to feature this season.

Ibrahim Osman – Feyenoord
Osman made his debut for Feyenoord on Saturday following a loan move from Brighton & Hove Albion. Having waited on paperwork clearance, Osman lasted 29 minutes in his first outing and will aim to impress when Feyenoord host Bayer Leverkusen in Rotterdam.

Mohammed Salisu – Monaco
The towering Ghanaian centre-back has been a model of consistency for Monaco this season, helping the club keep three clean sheets in four Ligue 1 games. Salisu is expected to make his Champions League debut against Barcelona on Thursday.

Sharani Zuberu – Slovan Bratislava
Zuberu has had a mixed start to the Slovakian season, appearing in three of Slovan Bratislava’s six league matches. He was a stoppage-time substitute in their 2-1 win over Dunajská Streda and will be in contention as Bratislava open their Champions League campaign against Celtic on September 18.

Patric Pfeiffer – Young Boys
The defender joined Swiss side Young Boys on a season-long loan from Augsburg. Pfeiffer has not yet featured this season due to injury but is expected to make his Champions League debut for the Swiss champions in the upcoming campaign.

With the new league format promising more intense fixtures and opportunities, these seven Ghanaian stars will be eager to make their mark on Europe’s premier club competition.
