USA knocked out of Women’s World Cup by Sweden

Reigning champions the USA were eliminated from the Women’s World Cup in a stunning penalty shootout loss to Sweden.

Despite dominating the 120-minute match, the USA was thwarted by an outstanding goalkeeping display from Zecira Musovic.

The shootout escalated the tension as three USA players, including 38-year-old Megan Rapinoe, missed their shots, setting the stage for Sweden’s victory. A dramatic moment emerged when USA keeper Alyssa Naeher initially saved Lina Hurtig’s attempt, only for VAR to intervene, leading to Sweden’s goal and jubilant celebrations.

Sweden’s formidable performance secured them a spot in the quarter-finals against Japan. The outcome was largely thanks to Musovic’s heroic 11 saves, as the USA struggled to replicate their previous World Cup-winning form.

Despite their strong legacy, the USA’s exit marks their worst performance in a Women’s World Cup, breaking their streak of always reaching the semi-finals. Rapinoe’s missed shot signals the end of her World Cup journey, as she plans to retire at the year’s end.
