It’s more than just a game – Desmond Ofei explains importance of Ghana’s friendly against Mexico

Ghana assistant coach Desmond Ofei says Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against the Mexico is about far more than simply preparing for a football match, insisting the occasion will serve as a major platform for players to showcase the strength of local talent and the future of Ghanaian football.
Ofei made the remarks in an exclusive interview with 3Sports following the announcement of the Black Stars squad for the May 22 fixture in Mexico, which includes a blend of home-based stars, U23 prospects and experienced internationals.
“This match represents more than just a game for us. It is an opportunity for these players to demonstrate the level of talent, character, discipline, and potential that exists within Ghanaian football,” Ofei told 3Sports.
He added: “We believe strongly in creating opportunities for players who are performing consistently and showing the right mentality.”
The squad selected by head coach Carlos Queiroz also includes 15 debutants, offering several young and emerging players their first opportunity to experience the demands and environment of senior international football.
The technical team believes the friendly will provide valuable exposure and help accelerate the development of the next generation of Black Stars players.
The Mexico friendly is expected to provide valuable experience for many of the younger and local-based players as Ghana continue preparations for future international assignments, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
For Ofei and the technical team, the match represents another important opportunity to build competition within the squad while giving emerging talents the chance to prove they belong at the highest level.
