“There is no AFCON vibe” — Hugo Broos criticises 2025 AFCON atmosphere

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has sparked discussion around the atmosphere at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), after openly expressing his disappointment with what he believes is a lack of energy and identity at the tournament.
Speaking after his team’s most recent match, the experienced Belgian tactician reflected on how the current environment compares unfavorably with previous AFCON editions he has witnessed.
Broos, who guided South Africa with a clear sense of perspective shaped by years of international experience, emphasized that AFCON has always stood out as more than just a football competition.
For him, the tournament’s uniqueness lies in the passion of the fans, the colorful streets, the music, and the constant reminder that an entire continent is celebrating football together. He noted that this defining spirit seems noticeably absent this time around.
“I don’t feel the same vibe like what I felt in Ivory Coast and Gabon. In Ivory Coast and in Gabon, every second of the tournament, you felt that you were in a tournament,” Broos said, underlining how deeply the atmosphere contributed to the overall experience in past editions.
The South African coach went further to paint a vivid picture of those earlier tournaments, recalling moments beyond the stadiums that made AFCON special.
“When we went with the bus to train in Ivory Coast for the AFCON 2023, the people were waving and they were with flags but here you see nothing,” he explained, suggesting that fan engagement outside match venues has been minimal.
According to Broos, these seemingly small details play a huge role in motivating players and creating unforgettable memories for teams and supporters alike. Without them, the tournament risks losing part of its soul.
“There is no vibe. There is no typical AFCON vibe. I don’t feel them here,” he added bluntly.
While Broos’ comments may divide opinion, they highlight an important conversation about what makes AFCON truly special.
Beyond tactics, results, and star players, the tournament’s heartbeat has always been its people.
As the competition continues, many will hope that the passion and color traditionally associated with AFCON can still emerge and restore the unique atmosphere that has defined Africa’s biggest football stage for decades.
