U20 AFCON: Flying Eagles Overcome Defending Champions Senegal on Penalties to Secure World Cup Spot

Seven-time champions Nigeria continued their impressive run at the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025 by defeating defending titleholders Senegal in a thrilling quarter-final clash on Monday in Ismailia, securing a place at the 2025 U20 World Cup.
The match brought together two of the competition’s most storied sides, each carrying the weight of expectations despite recent uncertainties. Senegal had advanced to the quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw against the Central African Republic in their opening game, navigating a campaign with some early setbacks.
Nigeria, in contrast, entered the knockout stage unbeaten. They opened with a 1-0 victory over Tunisia, followed by a goalless draw with Morocco, and a surprising 2-2 draw against already-eliminated Kenya, keeping their hopes of an eighth continental crown alive.
Senegal, aiming to become the first team to defend the U20 AFCON title since Ghana in 2011, fell short as Nigeria emerged victorious in a tense penalty shootout. With few clear-cut chances during regular and extra time, the game was ultimately decided by spot-kicks. Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt proved decisive, making two crucial saves that sealed the win for the Flying Eagles.
The victory not only keeps Nigeria’s dream of an eighth U20 AFCON title alive but also marks a return to the World Cup stage after a quarter-final exit in 2023.
Looking ahead, Nigeria will face the winner of the quarter-final between South Africa and DR Congo as they continue their pursuit of continental glory and a place in football history.
