“Sudan Can Go Far in AFCON; Title Is the Ultimate Goal” – Kwesi Appiah

Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah is confident that his team has what it takes to make a deep run in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite facing significant obstacles. The Ghanaian manager has guided Sudan to the Round of 16, an impressive feat for a side ranked 117th in the world, which has had to play on neutral venues due to the ongoing civil war in their country.
“Sudan deserves to go far in the AFCON, and our ultimate goal remains to chase for the AFCON title. We have respect for Senegal, they are a big footballing country in Africa, they are the former champions, but we are ready,” Appiah said ahead of their clash with defending champions Senegal.
Sudan’s progression to the knockout stage has already been historic, highlighted by their first AFCON win in 13 years, a 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea. Appiah’s tactical acumen and motivational skills have been central to the team’s revival, instilling belief in a squad often underestimated on the continental stage.
Sudan now faces a stern test against Senegal, led by star forward Sadio Mané, on January 4 at the Tangier Grand Stadium. Despite the challenge, Appiah remains resolute that his team can rise to the occasion. “We have respect for Senegal, but we are ready,” he reiterated, underlining his belief that Sudan can compete with Africa’s elite.
For Appiah and his players, the journey is about more than just a single victory, it is about proving that Sudan can challenge for the AFCON title and make a statement on the continental stage.
