Basketball Player Guillaume Hoareau Dies After Collapsing During Match

The basketball community has been left in shock following the death of Guillaume Hoareau, who collapsed during a match between Jersey and Guernsey on Saturday.

According to the Jersey Basketball Association (JBA), Hoareau, aged 40, suffered a cardiac arrest in the third quarter of the game at Fort Regent in St Helier. The match was immediately halted as emergency services rushed to his aid.

Spectators were asked to leave the venue while medical personnel attended to Hoareau on the court. Despite their efforts, he was later pronounced dead in hospital.

In a heartfelt tribute, the Jersey Basketball Association described the loss as devastating and deeply felt across the island’s sporting community.

“G was a pivotal part of our basketball family,” the association said. “He was an inspiration and a mentor to both our senior and junior players. He was passionate about basketball and committed to improving the game on the island.”

Hoareau proudly represented Jersey at the Island Games and was heavily involved in youth development, coaching young players and helping nurture the next generation of talent.

“Beyond his official roles, G was our friend, our brother, and the lifeblood of our community,” the statement continued. “His energy, passion, and huge spirit brought us so much joy and pride over many years.”

The association extended its deepest condolences to Hoareau’s loved ones, adding:
“We express our sincere sympathies to his wife and young family, whom we will support in every way possible during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are also with his wider family, friends, and colleagues at the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC).”

As a mark of respect, the Jersey Basketball Association has cancelled all training sessions until after the half-term break, allowing players, coaches, and officials time to grieve and come to terms with the tragic loss.

Hoareau’s passing has left a profound void in Jersey basketball, with tributes continuing to pour in for a man remembered not only for his contributions to the sport but for the warmth, leadership, and spirit he brought to everyone around him.
