Morocco vs Nigeria: Key Stats Ahead of the Semi-Final Clash

The stage is set in Rabat for a blockbuster TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 semi-final as hosts Morocco face Nigeria with a place in the final at stake. With both teams bringing contrasting strengths into the encounter, history, form and fine margins are all in play.

Nigeria in red-hot form

Nigeria arrive in the last four as the most dominant side in the tournament. The Super Eagles brushed aside Algeria 2–0 in the quarter-finals to maintain a perfect record, becoming the only team to win all five of their matches so far.

Even more impressively, Nigeria have scored at least two goals in every game at the finals, something they have only achieved once before, in 2000. Their 14 goals already represent their highest-ever tally at a single AFCON and equal the most scored by any team since Cameroon in 2021.

They have now scored in 12 consecutive AFCON matches and are enjoying their first-ever five-game winning streak at the tournament. The quarter-final against Algeria underlined their authority, as they did not allow a single shot on target, while their 21% shot-conversion rate is the best at AFCON 2025.

Victor Osimhen has been central to Nigeria’s success. The Napoli striker has four goals at the tournament, the most by a Nigerian since Odion Ighalo in 2019, and is involved in 10 goals overall. Crucially, Nigeria have never lost an AFCON match in which Osimhen has scored or assisted.

This will be Nigeria’s record-extending 16th AFCON semi-final. Victory would take them into a ninth final, drawing them level with Ghana and giving them consecutive final appearances for the first time since 1988 and 1990.

Morocco’s fortress and discipline

Morocco, however, bring a different kind of threat. The Atlas Lions edged Cameroon 1–0 in the quarter-finals to reach their first AFCON semi-final since 2004, building their campaign on defensive organisation and tactical discipline.

They have kept four clean sheets at this tournament, their most ever at a single AFCON, with Yassine Bounou becoming the first Moroccan goalkeeper to achieve that feat in the competition.

This is only Morocco’s fifth AFCON semi-final appearance and just their second on home soil after 1988. They have won only one of their previous four semi-finals, but all three defeats came by narrow 1–0 margins, showing how fine the lines have been at this stage.

In attack, Brahim Díaz has been their standout performer. His five goals mean he has scored in five different matches, a rare AFCON achievement, and he is now just one goal shy of Ahmed Faras’ all-time Moroccan AFCON record. Morocco have also been deadly from set pieces, scoring five goals from dead-ball situations, more than any other team in the tournament.

What’s at stake

A Moroccan victory would send the hosts into only their second AFCON final and their first in over 21 years, making them the second successive host nation to reach the showpiece match.

For Nigeria, another win would move them one step closer to a fourth continental title and further cement their status as AFCON’s most consistent semi-final performers.

Attack meets organisation, momentum meets home belief. With contrasting styles, rich history and fine margins, this semi-final promises a gripping battle for a place in the AFCON 2025 final.
