‘Juju’ Alfred destroys American duo to win historic gold medal for Saint Lucia

Julien Alfred cemented her sprint immortality in Paris on Saturday, August 04, beating American duo – Sha’ Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson to win the women’s 100m gold, becoming the first ever athlete from Saint Lucia to win an Olympic medal.

As reminiscent of her performance in the semi-final, Juju jumped from the blocks in flamboyance, leading the park to the finishing line in 10.72 seconds.

Sha’ Carri Richardson who was the frontrunner going into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games crossed the line in 10.87 seconds while M. Jefferson finished in 10.92 seconds to win bronze.

The Eastern Caribbean island nation with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, the Pitons, on its west coast have been present at every Olympic Games since 1996 in Atlanta, but had never had a touch of an Olympic medal until Alfred came into the picture.

The world 60m champion [Alfred] will now turn her attention to the 200m to see if he could become a double Olympic champion.
