Hugo Broos Urges South African Players to Compete in Competitive Leagues

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has highlighted the lack of South African players competing in Europe as a key factor behind the team’s early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 2019 bronze medalists were unable to replicate past success, bowing out at the Round of 16 in the current tournament. Reflecting on the campaign, Broos suggested that his squad was at a disadvantage compared to nations with a strong contingent of Europe-based players.
“There are teams at the Cup of Nations with players who play in Europe. We mostly don’t have them, and that is a disadvantage for South Africa,” the Belgian tactician explained.
Broos stressed that regular exposure to high-intensity competitions is essential for player development. He emphasized that domestic football alone cannot fully prepare players for the rigours of elite international competition.
“This is the opportunity our players need to have because they have to be challenged more,” Broos said. “I said from the beginning that the level of the PSL compared with the level we faced in the last weeks is very different, and you can only close that gap when you have players who are also playing in very difficult competitions.”
The coach expressed hope that more South African players will secure moves abroad in the future, believing it would significantly benefit the national team.
“So let’s hope that players in the future have more opportunities to go to Europe and play in those very difficult competitions and face those challenges, because that should help this team enormously,” Broos added.
Despite the disappointment of an early exit, the coach remains optimistic that increased exposure to top-level football will strengthen Bafana Bafana in future tournaments and help the team compete more effectively on the continental stage.
