Ghana may host CAF Women’s Champions League despite stadium challenges
Ghana is under consideration to host an upcoming edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League, despite concerns over stadium standards, Minister for Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif has revealed. CAF reportedly reached out to assess Ghana’s ability to host the prestigious tournament, impressed by the country’s facilities showcased during the African Games.
“CAF wrote to us that they wanted us to host the Women’s Champions League,” Ussif said. “It is because they have seen that we have the necessary facilities, thanks to what we achieved during the African Games.”
Although Ghana has faced issues with substandard pitches, including the recent banning of the Baba Yara Stadium for CAF Category C matches, the country has previously been represented in the Women’s Champions League. Hasaacas Ladies were runners-up in the inaugural 2021 edition, while Ampem Darkoa Ladies finished fourth last year.
In addition to the Women’s Champions League, Ussif confirmed that Ghana will host the 2024 African Athletics Championships. His announcement came during a session with Parliament’s Sports Select Committee, which was reviewing a petition from the Save Ghana Football Forum.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars, under coach Otto Addo, are preparing to name their squad for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations doubleheader against Sudan. Due to the Baba Yara Stadium ban, Ghana will need to secure an alternative venue for the fixtures, with the Ghana Football Association working to meet CAF’s requirements in time.
This development signals Ghana’s growing role in hosting major continental sports events, even as infrastructure upgrades remain a priority.
