FIFA Confirms Three-Minute Hydration Breaks for Every Half at 2026 World Cup

FIFA has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will introduce two scheduled three-minute hydration breaks in every match, aimed at protecting players from the extreme heat expected during the tournament.

The governing body also announced a novel addition to the event’s schedule: rather than a single opening ceremony, the tournament will feature three separate opening ceremonies across the host nations—Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The expanded World Cup, taking place from June 11 to July 19, has raised concerns about high temperatures common in North America during this period. Experts have warned that the heat could pose serious health risks for players, including the potential for heat-related illnesses. While some stadiums will host matches in enclosed, climate-controlled venues, a recent “Pitches in Peril” study found that 10 of the 16 host arenas face a very high risk of extreme heat stress.

To safeguard players, FIFA will implement hydration breaks at the 22-minute mark of each half, ensuring all teams receive equal opportunities to rehydrate and cool down. “This approach is intended to provide consistent conditions for all teams, in all fixtures,” FIFA said. The organisation also noted that the match calendar has been structured to reduce travel demands, allow balanced recovery periods, and make it easier for global audiences to follow the action across different time zones.

In addition to the hydration breaks, the 2026 World Cup will feature three opening ceremonies, a closing ceremony, and a Super Bowl-style halftime show. The first ceremony will precede the tournament’s curtain-raiser between Mexico and South Africa on June 11 in Mexico City.

Two additional opening events are scheduled for June 12: one ahead of Canada’s opener in Toronto against a European play-off winner, and another prior to the United States’ match against Paraguay in Los Angeles.

FIFA’s innovations aim to enhance player welfare, improve fan experience, and create a spectacular multi-nation launch for football’s most prestigious tournament.
