Brighton upset Aston Villa, denting their Champions League ambitions.

Brighton delivered a dramatic blow to Aston Villa’s Champions League ambitions with a late 87th-minute winner at the Amex Stadium, thanks to Joao Pedro. The Brazilian striker capitalized on a rebound after his initial penalty had been saved by Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen, sealing a memorable victory for the Seagulls.

The match had been tightly contested, with VAR intervening multiple times. Pascal Gross thought he had given Brighton the lead earlier, but his goal was ruled out for offside. Villa, meanwhile, had a goal disallowed when captain John McGinn was judged offside, leaving both sides frustrated during much of the first half.

Brighton’s persistence eventually paid off after Simon Adingra was fouled in the box by Ezri Konsa, earning a penalty. Pedro’s spot-kick was initially denied, but he quickly reacted to head in the rebound, sending the home fans into celebration.

The win ended Brighton’s six-match winless run, lifted Roberto de Zerbi’s side to 11th in the Premier League, and marked their first home victory over Villa since 1980. For Aston Villa, the defeat represents a serious setback in their push for a top-four finish, leaving them with only two games remaining to salvage their Champions League hopes.

While Brighton can now look forward to a strong finish to the season, Villa must regroup quickly to keep their European ambitions alive.
