Desmond Ofei backs local talent ahead of Ghana-Mexico friendly

Black Stars deputy coach Desmond Ofei has expressed confidence in the squad selected for Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against the Mexico, insisting the game presents an important opportunity for local and emerging players to prove themselves on the international stage.

The assistant coach was speaking after the announcement of the Black Stars 23-man squad for the May 22 encounter in Mexico, which includes a strong blend of Ghana Premier League performers, exciting U23 prospects and experienced internationals.

“For the upcoming game against Mexico, we have selected a very talented and ambitious group of players from our local league, alongside some exciting U23 talents and players who are highly motivated to show their qualities to the nation and to our new head coach, Mr. Carlos Queiroz,” Ofei told 3Sports in an exclusive interview.

The squad selection has drawn attention due to the inclusion of six home-based players, including Salim Adams, Razak Simpson, Ebenezer Abban, Ebenezer Adade, Solomon Agbasi, and Benjamin Asare, who replaced Dreams FC goalkeeper Gidios Aseako, as Ghana continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ofei believes the fixture will not only test the team against high-level opposition but also allow the technical team to evaluate depth and readiness ahead of future assignments. The game will also mark another important step in the early stages of Carlos Queiroz’s reign as Black Stars head coach.

Ghana are expected to depart for Mexico in the coming days as preparations intensify for the high-profile international friendly.
