2026 World Cup: Tuchel Reacts as England Draw Ghana in Group L

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has reacted to the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw after the Three Lions were placed in Group L alongside Ghana, Croatia and Panama.
The draw, held in Washington D.C., handed England a demanding path as they begin their quest for a second World Cup crown, with all three group opponents bringing significant tournament pedigree and contrasting styles.
Tuchel admitted the group would pose a stern test but insisted England would approach the challenge with confidence, preparation and full respect for their opponents.
“Difficult opener, difficult group. With Croatia and Ghana, two regulars at World Cups and two proud, strong nations,” Tuchel told BBC Sport.
“For me, I’ve only experienced group football in Champions League formats, and the approach was always to give it maximum respect and focus on winning the group. It always looks tough, just like our group now, but we’re confident and we’ll be fully prepared when we arrive.”
England will open their World Cup campaign with a high-profile rematch against Croatia on Wednesday, June 17, revisiting their memorable 2018 World Cup semifinal clash. The fixture is expected to take place in Dallas or Toronto, setting the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested Group L.
With Ghana and Panama also capable of causing problems, Group L is shaping up to be one of the tournament’s most competitive sections, where consistency and focus will be vital for teams aiming to progress in the expanded 48-team format.
