FIFA Cautions African Supporters on Fireworks and Smoke Use at 2026 World Cup Venues

The Chief Safety and Security Officer for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, G.B. Jones, has urged African supporters planning to attend the tournament to familiarise themselves with stadium safety and security regulations ahead of the competition.

Speaking ahead of the World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, Jones stressed that while FIFA welcomes passion and vibrant fan support, certain items will be strictly prohibited inside stadiums.

Responding to a question from Ghanaian sports journalist Gary Al-Smith at an event organised by the Africa Center of the Atlantic Council, Jones explained that musical instruments, fireworks and pyrotechnic materials will not be allowed during matches.

“With respect to what to bring to the World Cup, we want you to bring your passion, but leave your pyro,” Jones said. “We don’t want the fireworks with the smoke or the pyrotechnicians in the stadium. But we want to embrace the passion.”

Jones advised travelling fans to regularly check FIFA’s official website and their ticket information for the full list of prohibited items, stressing the importance of compliance.

“Please understand our prohibited items include those which will be listed on our website or on the ticket information. Know what you can and cannot bring to the stadium,” he added.

Despite the restrictions, FIFA is encouraging supporters to contribute to the atmosphere through approved means. Jones noted that banners, flags and other fan paraphernalia will be permitted, provided they comply with FIFA’s safety and security guidelines.

“We want to ensure that you can get all your items into all the stadiums,” he said. “Fans should bring what will help them celebrate, but within the limits set for safety.”

Jones concluded by emphasizing that adherence to stadium regulations will be crucial to ensuring a safe, secure and incident-free tournament for all participants and spectators at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
