Asamoah Gyan recalls telling his brother before scoring debut World Cup goal

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has shared a remarkable story about his debut goal at the 2006 World Cup, revealing that he had a premonition of scoring against the Czech Republic. After Ghana’s disappointing 2-0 opening loss to Italy, expectations were low ahead of the match against the highly ranked Czech team.
Defying the odds, Gyan scored just 68 seconds into the game, securing Ghana’s first-ever World Cup win and registering the fastest goal of the tournament. In an interview with Sport Blitz 360, he recalled telling his brother, Baffour, that morning:
“I prophesied my first World Cup goal. I told my brother in our hotel room when he was leaving for Ghana that I feel I will score. So, I told him to tell Ghanaians I will score. I saw it before the game.”
That goal marked a pivotal moment in Gyan’s international career, paving the way for further success. He went on to score five more goals across the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, becoming the highest-scoring African player in World Cup history. Gyan also became Ghana’s all-time top scorer, with 51 goals in 109 appearances.
Since retiring in June 2023, Gyan has focused on off-field initiatives, launching the All Regional Games project aimed at identifying and nurturing young talents across various sports in Ghana. His efforts reflect a continued commitment to developing sports and empowering the next generation of Ghanaian athletes.
