Wydad Casablanca Triumph Over Al Ahly to Win African Champions League

Zouheir El Moutaraji’s brace secured Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca a 2-0 victory over Egypt’s Al Ahly in the African Champions League final, earning the club their third continental title after previous triumphs in 1992 and 2017. The win also denied Al Ahly a chance at a third consecutive crown.
El Moutaraji opened the scoring with a spectacular strike from 30 yards in the first half, sending the home crowd into raptures. Minutes after the break, he doubled the lead by finishing a swift counter-attack, cementing Wydad’s dominance in front of fans attending a continental final at the Casablanca stadium for the first time since 2019.
Wydad began strongly, with Congo-Brazzaville striker Guy Mbenza hitting the bar early on. Al Ahly attempted to respond through Yasser Ibrahim and Taher Mohamed, but both efforts went wide. Despite dominating possession at times, the Egyptian side struggled to create clear opportunities, with their first shot on target only coming in the 73rd minute through substitute Afsha, which was well saved by Wydad goalkeeper Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti.
Tagnaouti was in top form, denying several close-range attempts from Al Ahly forwards, including Mohsen Salah and Percy Tau, keeping the visitors at bay. Despite their pressure, Al Ahly were unable to break through, and Wydad’s counter-attacking efficiency proved decisive.
As the final whistle blew, Wydad fans erupted in celebration, witnessing their team lift the African Champions League trophy on home soil, a fitting end to a memorable night in Casablanca.
