Chelsea hand Barcelona first defeat with vital Women’s Champions League win

Chelsea produced a historic performance to end Barcelona’s long unbeaten run, becoming the first team since February 2019 to defeat the Spanish giants on their own turf. The landmark result came in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final, as the Blues claimed a hard-fought 1–0 victory in Spain.

The decisive moment arrived in the first half when Erin Cuthbert struck the winning goal, separating two evenly matched sides in a tense and closely fought encounter.

Chelsea entered the match facing a formidable Barcelona side that had not tasted defeat since May last year and had been dominant throughout the season. However, Emma Hayes’ team showed discipline, resilience and belief to secure a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg.

Hayes made five changes to the side that defeated Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League earlier in the week. Lauren James returned to the starting XI after the club confirmed she had been managing a foot injury, while captain Millie Bright was included in the matchday squad for the first time since November following her recovery from a knee problem.

Barcelona pushed hard for an equaliser and came agonisingly close in the closing moments of the match, but Chelsea’s defence held firm to preserve their slender lead.

The victory gives Chelsea a narrow advantage heading into the second leg, which will be played next Saturday in London.

The two teams also met at the semi-final stage last season, when Barcelona edged the first leg 1–0 before progressing to the final. This time, however, Chelsea have reversed the script with a vital away win.

Before this encounter, Barcelona had gone 31 matches unbeaten across all competitions this season, recording 29 wins and two draws in the league and Champions League. Chelsea’s triumph ended that remarkable streak, though the Blues know they will need another strong performance in the second leg if they are to complete the job and keep alive their hopes of defending their European crown.
