Otto Addo: “We Showcased Quality Football at the World Cup”

Ghana Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has reiterated his commitment to a style of football focused on quality and structure, claiming that his teams, including the Black Stars at the 2022 World Cup, have always been set up to play attractive and effective football. As he begins his second stint as national team coach, Addo is preparing the team for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.

During his first tenure, Addo guided Ghana to four wins, four draws, and four losses, including the 2022 World Cup campaign, where the team recorded one win but bowed out of the group stage following two defeats. Despite the disappointing outcome, Addo emphasizes that his focus has always been on instilling a culture of good football, which he believes was evident even on the World Cup stage.

“What I want to hear assessed is the way we play. The way we play. And I think we showed, even though we went out, when we played Nigeria the first time I came, we played good football, not just offensively, but also defensively. Even at the World Cup, we had good phases where we played good football, and this is what I want to have permanent in every game,” Addo explained.

After stepping down from his previous role following Ghana’s group-stage exit in 2022, Addo resumed his talent coaching position at Borussia Dortmund. He has now returned to the Black Stars, taking over from Chris Hughton, who had served as Technical Advisor during Addo’s first stint.

The former Black Stars player is tasked with revitalizing the team’s form, with the upcoming qualifiers presenting a crucial opportunity for Ghana to secure its first victory in 2024 and reassert itself on the international stage.
