FIFA has released the pots for the African qualifying draw for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Ghana, four-time African champions, have been placed in Pot 2, opening up the possibility of a high-profile clash against their longtime rivals, Nigeria, in the qualifying campaign.
Being in Pot 2 also means the Black Stars could face other tough opponents, including Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon, Mali, and Ivory Coast, making their path to the tournament a challenging one.
The draw, scheduled for July 12, will determine the groups for the qualifying campaign ahead of the 2026 World Cup. FIFA divided the African teams into six pots based on the latest world rankings, with Pot 1 reserved for the continent’s highest-ranked nations. Ghana, ranked 11th in Africa, narrowly missed out on that top tier.
The qualifying groups will feature nine groups of six teams each. The winners of each group will secure direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, while the four best runners-up will compete in a mini-tournament, with the victor advancing to an intercontinental playoff.
A potential rematch with Nigeria could rekindle memories of the thrilling 2022 World Cup qualifying playoff, where the Black Stars triumphed on away goals to secure their place in the tournament in Qatar.
With the draw approaching, Ghana will be aiming to navigate their challenging group and secure a fifth World Cup appearance.
