2026 World Cup Draw: Ghana Placed in Group L with England, Croatia and Panama

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The draw was conducted on Friday at the John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C., officially setting the stage for the expanded global showpiece.
The Black Stars secured qualification for the tournament as Group I leaders, amassing 25 points to book their place at the World Cup for the fifth time. They now face a demanding group that features teams ranked 4th, 10th, and 30th in the FIFA World Rankings, underlining the scale of the challenge ahead.
The 2026 edition will feature an expanded format, with 32 teams advancing from the group stage, compared to the traditional 16 that have progressed to the knockout rounds since 1998. In addition to the 12 group winners and 12 runners-up, the eight best third-placed teams will also qualify for the Round of 32.
As a result, Ghana must finish within the top two in Group L or rank among the eight best third-placed teams to progress to the knockout stages.
Meanwhile, Ghanaian fans will have to wait until Saturday, December 6, 2025, when FIFA is expected to release the finalised match schedule, including kick-off times and venues for each group fixture.
Ghana’s World Cup History
Ghana made their World Cup debut in Germany 2006, where they emerged as the only African nation to reach the knockout stages, becoming the sixth African country to progress beyond the group phase.
The Black Stars built on that success at South Africa 2010, advancing to the quarter-finals before suffering a dramatic elimination by Uruguay. That historic run remains Ghana’s best performance at the World Cup.
However, their fortunes dipped in subsequent tournaments. Ghana endured a disastrous campaign at Brazil 2014, failed to qualify for Russia 2018, and exited at the group stage upon their return to the tournament four years later.
With the expanded format and renewed optimism surrounding the squad, many Ghanaians believe the Black Stars have a strong opportunity to progress beyond the group stage in 2026. The challenge is significant, but the pathway is clearer than ever before.
