Ernest Poku Discusses Ghana Ambitions Ahead of the 2026 World Cup

Bayer Leverkusen forward Ernest Poku has spoken openly about the possibility of representing Ghana at senior international level, admitting that he is yet to make a decision due to the absence of any formal approach.
The 21-year-old revealed that he has not been contacted by the Ghana Football Association and would need time to consult his family and representatives before committing to the Black Stars.
Speaking in an interview with Oma Akatugba following Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, Poku said the matter remains undecided.
“We have to see. I don’t know yet. I didn’t get a call or something, so I don’t know,” Poku said when asked about the prospect of playing for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I would have to talk with my parents about it and with my agent as well, so we’ll see.”
Despite his uncertainty, the Netherlands-born attacker acknowledged his strong connection to Africa and his Ghanaian roots.
“Yes, of course. I love the food, I love the music. My parents are from Ghana, so I can speak Ghana [a Ghanaian language],” he added.
Poku also shared his appreciation for African music, naming Burna Boy, Davido and Ghanaian star Shatta Wale among his favourites.
At international youth level, Poku has represented the Netherlands, featuring for the U–16, U-19 and U-21 national teams. He made two appearances for the Dutch U-16 side in 2020 and later earned a place in the U-19 squad in 2022, scoring his first goal at that level against Ukraine.
At club level, Poku rose through the ranks at AZ Alkmaar, scoring 15 goals for the club’s youth team before earning promotion to the senior side.
On 12 August 2025, he completed a move to Bayer Leverkusen for a reported €10 million, with a further €2 million in add-ons, signing a five-year contract that runs until June 2030.
The winger has made an impressive start to life in Germany, contributing to 11 goals in 25 appearances this season, scoring five goals and providing six assists, while operating mainly on the right flank.
With Ghana seeking to strengthen its squad ahead of the expanded 2026 World Cup, Poku’s comments suggest that any future international switch will depend on discussions with his family, agent and potential engagement from the Ghana Football Association.
