Hasaacas Ladies fall short of CAF Women’s Champions League qualification despite 6-1 triumph

Hasaacas Ladies will miss out on the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League after a commanding 6-1 victory in their final WAFU B qualifying match, finishing third in their group and falling short on goal difference.

The Ghanaian champions had suffered a 3-0 defeat to Edo Queens in their second group game, making their final match a must-win with a big margin to secure a semifinal spot. Fatoumata Toumboura gave Hasaacas an early lead in the 16th minute, and Grace Animah and Comfort Owusu added two more goals before halftime to make it 3-0. AS Garde Nationale pulled one back through Rahina Moussa Hassane, leaving the score 3-1 at the break.

In the second half, Comfort Owusu completed her hat-trick, and Abigail Sakyiwaa sealed the 6-1 win in stoppage time. Despite the dominant performance, Edo Queens’ 1-0 victory over AO Etincelle meant they progressed on goal difference. Edo Queens topped the group with nine points and nine goals, while AO Etincelle advanced with four points and four goals. Hasaacas Ladies also finished with four points but a +2 goal difference, placing them third. AS Garde Nationale ended at the bottom with no points and a -15 goal difference.

The WAFU B semifinals are set for Monday, August 19, 2024, with Ainonvi FC facing AO Etincelle and Edo Queens taking on FC Inter d’Abidjan.

Hasaacas Ladies’ emphatic win, while impressive, was ultimately not enough to advance them to the continental stage.
