Iraola hails Semenyo as one of the best he’s coached amid Bournemouth exit talks

Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has heaped glowing praise on Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo, describing the forward as one of the best players he has ever coached following an emotional night at the Vitality Stadium.
Semenyo was the hero as Bournemouth staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 3–2, scoring a stunning stoppage-time winner that could prove to be his final goal for the Cherries. The strike, his 10th of the season, capped a memorable individual performance and sparked wild celebrations among a packed home crowd.
With reports linking the 26-year-old with an imminent move to Manchester City, many believe the thrilling encounter marked Semenyo’s last appearance in a Bournemouth shirt. If that proves to be the case, the forward could not have scripted a more fitting farewell.
His decisive goal not only completed a remarkable turnaround but also brought an end to Bournemouth’s unwanted 11-game winless run, turning the evening into a symbolic “last dance” that will live long in the memory of supporters. Throughout the season, Semenyo has been Bournemouth’s standout performer and one of the most consistent attacking threats in the Premier League.
Blessed with power, versatility and a clinical end product, he has become a fan favourite on the south coast. His expected £65 million move to Manchester City, with a release clause set to expire on January 10, represents a significant blow for the Cherries.
Speaking after the match, Iraola, who successfully transformed Semenyo from a central striker into a more productive wide attacker, could not hide his admiration for the Ghanaian’s impact and professionalism.
“It’s a fairytale ending,” Iraola said. “Football sometimes gives you something back if you’re really committed. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached.”
The Spanish tactician also highlighted Semenyo’s attitude amid intense transfer speculation, noting that many players might have handled the situation differently.
“It’s not easy to do what he has done,” Iraola added. “A lot of players would have acted differently. He has never found excuses. He was always ready to give whatever the team needed.”
While Iraola admitted he would have loved to keep Semenyo for several more years, he acknowledged that the time had come for the forward to take the next step in his career.
“We pushed a lot to keep him until the very last second here,” he said. “I think it is fair that he leaves with the feeling he had at the end, the substitution and the reception from the supporters.”
Iraola concluded by crediting Semenyo’s relentless work ethic and determination for earning a move to one of Europe’s elite clubs.
“He has earned all this,” Iraola said. “I’m very happy for him because we know he is a top player, but especially a top person.”
As he prepares for a new chapter at Manchester City, Semenyo departs Bournemouth with the admiration of his manager, the gratitude of the supporters, and memories that will endure long after his exit.
