Senegal make powerful AFCON 2025 statement with dominant 3–0 win over Botswana

Senegal began their Africa Cup of Nations Group D campaign in emphatic style, delivering a commanding 3–0 victory over Botswana on Tuesday evening and immediately underlining their status as one of the tournament’s leading contenders.

From the opening whistle, the Teranga Lions asserted their dominance, controlling possession, dictating the tempo, and pinning Botswana deep in their own half. Senegal’s intent was clear early on, with wave after wave of attacking moves testing the Botswana defense. Despite some early resistance, the pressure eventually told just before halftime.

In the 40th minute, Nicolas Jackson broke the deadlock with a well-taken finish. The Bayern Munich forward timed his run perfectly to meet a precise cross from Ismail Jakobs, calmly guiding the ball home to give Senegal a deserved lead heading into the interval. It was a moment that reflected Senegal’s patience and quality after sustained attacking play.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Senegal showing confidence, composure, and attacking fluidity. Just 13 minutes after the restart, Jackson struck again. This time, the goal came at the end of an excellent team move, expertly orchestrated by Ismaïla Sarr, as Senegal carved through Botswana’s defensive shape with ease. Jackson’s second goal effectively put the contest beyond reach.

Senegal continued to press forward without losing their defensive discipline, limiting Botswana to very few opportunities while maintaining control of the match. Their depth was evident late on, and in stoppage time, substitute Ndiaye put the finishing touch on a dominant performance. Capitalizing on an assist from Sabaly, Ndiaye calmly converted to make it 3–0 and seal a comprehensive victory.

The result gives Senegal a perfect start to their AFCON 2025 campaign and sends a clear message to their Group D rivals. With a balanced blend of experience, attacking firepower, and tactical discipline, the Teranga Lions look determined to go deep into the tournament and reaffirm their place among Africa’s elite.
