“Semenyo was excellent” – Otto Addo backs forwad amid rising criticism

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has thrown his full support behind Antoine Semenyo, describing the forward as “excellent” despite growing criticism from fans who believe the Bournemouth striker is yet to deliver consistently in national colours.

Semenyo, who has been in fine form in the English Premier League, scoring two goals and providing an assist in his first three matches this season—was nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award in August.

However, that same spark seemed to fade during Ghana’s September international window, where the Black Stars faced Chad and Mali in crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 25-year-old forward featured in both matches but failed to find the back of the net or provide an assist, extending his international tally to just three goals in 27 appearances.

His last strike came back in March during Ghana’s dominant 5-0 victory over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium.

After Ghana narrowly edged Mali 1-0 in Accra to retain their lead in Group I, Addo was asked about Semenyo’s inability to replicate his club form with the national team.

The coach was quick to defend the striker, highlighting the unique challenges of African football.

“It’s difficult to compare games from the Premier League and games in Africa and Ghana. All games have their own nature,” Addo said. “Today he was excellent. He fought till he couldn’t run anymore. I was very glad with his performance and runs especially.”

Addo’s words reflect confidence in Semenyo’s efforts, even if the end product is still missing.

With crucial fixtures against the Central African Republic and Comoros coming up in October, the pressure is mounting on the Black Stars and on Semenyo to deliver.

Ghana is seeking its fifth World Cup appearance, and if that dream is to become a reality, Semenyo will need to silence his doubters and shine when it matters most.
