Barcelona Clinch Third Women’s Champions League Title with Victory Over Lyon

Barcelona successfully defended their UEFA Women’s Champions League crown and completed a historic quadruple after overcoming record eight-time winners Lyon in a thrilling final at a sold-out San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.
The highly anticipated clash lived up to expectations, with both sides producing a captivating contest that remained goalless at halftime despite several promising moments. Barcelona dominated possession, but Lyon’s disciplined defensive structure ensured the first half ended in stalemate.
The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute when reigning Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí fired a deflected effort past the Lyon goalkeeper to give the Catalan side a deserved lead. The goal injected renewed belief into Barcelona, who continued to control proceedings.
Alexia Putellas later sealed the victory, capping a memorable night for Barça and avenging their defeat to Lyon in the 2022 final. The win marked Barcelona’s first-ever victory over Lyon in a Women’s Champions League final after four previous unsuccessful attempts and secured their third title in the competition’s history.
The final also marked the last match in charge for both managers. Lyon coach Sonia Bompastor, who is set to replace Emma Hayes at Chelsea, was hoping to bow out with silverware. Her side came close on a few occasions, notably when Lucy Bronze nearly turned a corner into her own net, striking the crossbar. Further chances fell to Wendie Renard and Kadidiatou Diani, but Barcelona’s defence held firm.
Ultimately, Barcelona’s composure, quality, and control proved decisive. The victory completed a sensational quadruple for the Catalan giants, who had already secured domestic honours earlier in the season, cementing their status as one of the dominant forces in women’s football.
