2025 AFCON: Mané scores first goal to rescue point for Senegal against DRC

Sadio Mané announced his presence at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in style by scoring his first goal of the tournament as defending champions Senegal were held to a 1–1 draw by DR Congo in a fiercely contested Group D encounter in Tanger.

The result keeps both teams firmly in contention for qualification, with Senegal maintaining their place at the top of the group.

Senegal started the match brightly, dominating possession and dictating the tempo for large stretches of the first half.

Their fluid passing and movement created several promising openings, but a lack of composure in front of goal proved costly.

Ismaïla Sarr and Nicolas Jackson both had clear opportunities to put the Lions of Teranga ahead, only to squander their chances, allowing DR Congo to remain firmly in the contest.

The breakthrough instead came for DR Congo in the second half. Capitalizing on a rare defensive lapse from Senegal, Cédric Bakambu showed great awareness and finishing ability to give his side the lead, silencing the Senegalese supporters and shifting the momentum of the game.

The goal injected confidence into DR Congo, who defended with discipline and threatened on the counterattack.

However, Senegal’s experience and resilience soon came to the fore.

Just when it appeared they might be heading for a damaging defeat, Sadio Mané stepped up with a crucial equalizer.

His 51st international goal demonstrated his trademark calmness and leadership, dragging Senegal level and ensuring they left Tanger with a valuable point.

The draw sees Senegal remain top of Group D with four points, level with DR Congo, setting up an intriguing finish to the group stage.

Senegal will face Benin in their final match, while DR Congo prepare to take on Botswana, with qualification still very much at stake for both sides.
