Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan qualify for round of 16 of AFCON 2025

Kwesi Appiah has etched his name into Sudanese football history after guiding the Jediane to qualification for the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Sudan sealed their place as one of the best third-placed teams following Morocco’s crucial victory over Zambia, a result that confirmed their progression even before the final round of group matches.

It marks a remarkable turnaround for a team that started the tournament at the bottom of their group but climbed to third place after recording a historic win.

The triumph was particularly significant as it was only Sudan’s second-ever victory at the AFCON since 1970, and their first at the tournament since 2012.

Under the calm and experienced leadership of Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah, the Jediane have shown resilience, tactical discipline, and belief, making this campaign one of their most memorable in decades.

Appiah’s achievement adds another chapter to his impressive coaching career, as he continues to make history with Sudan on the continental stage.

Although they still face Burkina Faso in their final group match on Wednesday, qualification is already secured, easing pressure and boosting confidence.

So far, 14 teams have booked their spots in the knockout phase, with only two places left.

Sudan now join the likes of Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Ivory Coast in the Round of 16, standing tall among Africa’s elite and daring to dream of more.
