“Ghana Signs MoU to Host 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in May 2026”

Ghana has officially secured the hosting rights for the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), Ghana Athletics, and the Government of Ghana.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Republic of Ghana by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adam, confirming the country’s commitment to stage the continental championship from May 12 to 17, 2026. The event will be hosted at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra.

The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation Conference Room, brought together a high-powered delegation from the CAA, led by its President, Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lamine Fati. Also present was a CAA Region Two delegation headed by Chief Tonobok Okowa.

Ghana Athletics was represented by its President, Mr. Bawah Fuseini, while the Ghana Olympic Committee delegation was led by Lawyer Richard Akakpovie. The National Sports Authority was represented by the Deputy Director-General (Technical), Madam Victoria Commey. Several other key stakeholders were also in attendance, expressing confidence in Ghana’s readiness to successfully host the championship.

The MoU outlines the framework for collaboration between the CAA, Ghana Athletics, and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation as preparations intensify ahead of the 2026 event.

Earlier in the day, officials from the CAA and Ghana Athletics paid courtesy visits to the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Olympic Committee, and the University of Ghana Sports Directorate as part of ongoing stakeholder engagements.

The championships are expected to attract Africa’s top athletes and officials, further enhancing Ghana’s reputation as a trusted host of major international sporting events.

Building on the successful hosting of the 13th African Games, Ghana aims to raise the bar even higher at the 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships. The experience, infrastructure, and organisational capacity demonstrated during the All African Games have strengthened confidence in the country’s ability to deliver another world-class athletics event.
