Ghana can exceed expectations at the World Cup – Kwesi Appiah

Former Black Stars head coach and current Sudan national team coach, James Kwesi Appiah, believes Ghana has what it takes to go far at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, despite being drawn in a challenging group.
Speaking in an interview with Akoma 87.9 FM, Appiah expressed confidence in the quality and potential of the Black Stars, urging both the players and Ghanaians to fully commit to the journey ahead.
“Ghana has a strong team and they can achieve what Ghanaians never expected. The team needs to work hard and all Ghanaians need to put our support behind them,” he said.
Reacting to the World Cup draw, Appiah dismissed the idea of overwhelming favourites within Ghana’s group, describing the teams as equals who will battle for success on the world’s biggest football stage.
“There are no stronger opponents, but rather equals who are going to battle at the World Cup,” he noted.
The experienced coach cautioned against underestimating any side at the tournament, stressing that every team at the World Cup has earned its place and deserves respect.
“All the teams in the group are beatable, but a team at the World Cup can’t be underrated,” Appiah added.
Appiah also highlighted the importance of player fitness, expressing hope that the Black Stars squad will avoid injuries before and during the tournament.
“We pray that our players do not sustain any injuries before or during the stages of the competition,” he said.
Ending on an optimistic note, the former Ghana coach encouraged belief and unity, insisting that the Black Stars are capable of making a deep run.
“Nothing is impossible, and we can go far in this tournament.”
Ghana will head into the World Cup with renewed confidence as expectations build among fans both at home and abroad.
