2026 Budget: Government allocates GH₵150 Million for Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup preparation

The Government of Ghana has allocated a substantial GH₵150 million to support the senior national football team, the Black Stars, in their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on Thursday, November 13, 2025, during the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement in Parliament.

This funding reflects the government’s continued commitment to promoting sports development across the country and ensuring national teams are well-supported in their international endeavors.

Dr. Forson emphasized that this allocation is part of the broader strategy to invest in sports infrastructure and talent development, with particular focus on the construction of new stadia in selected regions.

The Minister highlighted that the government’s consistent investment in sports has yielded positive outcomes, pointing to the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2026 World Cup as a key example of the success of this approach.

“The government’s sustained investment in sports has yielded impressive results, with the Black Stars qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Dr. Forson noted.

In addition to the financial support, the Black Stars are eagerly awaiting the official draw for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in Washington, DC, on December 5. Ghana will learn their group stage opponents at this event.

The 2026 World Cup will be historic, featuring 48 teams for the first time.

The tournament, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, promises to be the largest and most lucrative in history, with a total prize pool of $652 million, up from $440 million in 2022.

Each team’s earnings will depend on their progress in the tournament, with group stage teams receiving $10 million and top finishers earning up to $50 million for the winners.
