CAF Champions League: JS Kabylie Overpower Gold Stars to Reach Next Round

Bibiani Gold Stars’ maiden appearance in African inter-club football ended in disappointment on Sunday as they suffered a crushing 5–0 defeat to Algerian giants JS Kabylie in the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie. The result sealed a comprehensive 7–0 aggregate victory for the North Africans, bringing the curtain down on Gold Stars’ debut continental campaign at the earliest stage.

The Ghanaian side arrived at the 1 November 1954 Stadium facing an uphill task, needing to overturn a 2–0 first-leg deficit from Accra. Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished as Kabylie asserted control from the opening whistle.

The hosts’ aggressive high press and swift passing combinations repeatedly exposed Gold Stars’ defence. Kabylie dominated possession and territory, pinning the Miners deep in their own half. By halftime, the Algerian outfit had already found the net twice, effectively placing the tie beyond Gold Stars’ reach.

Matters worsened for the visitors after the break. Kabylie’s wide players stretched the Ghanaian backline, while their superiority in midfield allowed them to dictate the tempo and create chance after chance. The pressure told as the Algerians added three more goals in the second half, turning the contest into a one-sided display of continental pedigree against youthful inexperience.

For Gold Stars, the gulf in class was evident. Making their first-ever appearance in African competition, the Miners struggled to retain possession, rarely threatened in attack, and appeared vulnerable whenever Kabylie surged forward. A lack of composure and tactical discipline ultimately proved costly against opponents well-versed in the demands of continental football.

Despite the heavy scoreline, the campaign represents a significant milestone for the Bibiani-based club. Their qualification for the Champions League preliminary round marks an important step in the club’s growth, and the experience gained will be invaluable moving forward.

Gold Stars will now shift their attention back to domestic duties in the Ghana Premier League, determined to apply the lessons learned from their brief continental adventure.

For JS Kabylie, the victory was a routine yet authoritative statement. The Algerian heavyweights showcased their experience, efficiency, and ruthless edge, underlining their status as one of Africa’s established forces as they march confidently into the next round of the competition.
